According to a report from the Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC), the number of work-related fatalities in Texas increased by 25% in 2019. The report shows that 608 workplace fatalities occurred in private and public/governmental sectors in 2019. In 2018, there were 488 workplace fatalities.

The incident rate of fatal occupational injuries in the state of Texas was 4.7 per 100,000 full-time employees in 2019. Private sector employees accounted for 94% of the fatal occupational injuries with 573 incidents. 35 fatal occupational incidents involved public/governmental sector employees, which increased by one compared to 2018.

The trade, transportation, and utilities industries had the highest number of fatal work injuries, with 199 incidents. This represents 33% of all incidents in Texas. In 2018, the total number of incidents was 168. 20% of fatal work injuries occurred in the construction industry. In 2019, there 123 incidents, up from 107 incidents in 2018

Driver/sales workers and truck drivers were the occupation with the highest number of fatal work injuries. There were 142 fatal work injuries in 2019, which represents 23% of all fatal work injuries that year. In 2018, the total number of incidents was 123.

When it comes to slip and fall accidents, 96 were reported in 2019, accounting for 16% of all incidents. In 2018, there were 71 incidents of falls, slips, and trips. Construction and extraction had the largest increase in fatal occupational incidents from 2018 to 2019. In 2018, there were 105 fatal occupational incidents, which increased to 136 in 2019.
