On December 7, Older Driver Safety Awareness Week began. During this week, families are encouraged to discuss aging and driving. The American Occupational Therapy Association launched this program in 2009 as an effort to increase awareness regarding how older persons behind the wheel can increase the amount of accidents that occur on the roadways throughout the nation.

A project coordinator of the program adds that declining health does not have to be a negative issue. Instead, he believes it can be a proactive way to handle such inevitable situations.

Representatives from the American Occupation Therapy Association state families should keep an eye out for the following symptoms to protect elderly family members and those who share the road:

• Decreased range of motion in different body parts
• Arthritis
• Increasing fragility
• Decline in strength
• Hearing loss
• Troubled vision
• Changes in cognition
• Medication consumption
• Medical conditions
