Federal safety officials are investigating the death of a Houston area man under suspicion that he may be the latest victim of defective airbags manufactured by Takata Corporation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 35-year-old man died in a low-speed crash in January. There is evidence that the airbag exploded and sent shrapnel into his neck. Federal regulators state that the man was driving a 2002 Honda Accord, which is one of the models listed in the national recall of Takata airbags.
The Japanese auto parts manufacturer Takata Corporation has come under increasing scrutiny after its airbags have been linked to a number of injuries and deaths. The problem, according to officials, is that the airbags can rupture and explode during deployment, shooting out shrapnel that can seriously harm vehicle occupants.
Takata has recalled millions of vehicles due to the defect. Recalled vehicles include various makes from the following manufacturers:
Last year, the NHTSA issued a consumer advisory urging owners of recalled vehicles to take immediate action to have their airbags replaced. Additionally, many victims and families who suffered harm as a result of the defective airbags have begun filing lawsuits against Takata. Takata is also being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Although investigations into what Takata knew about the defective airbags are still ongoing, victims have a right to pursue compensation by filing personal injury lawsuits under product liability laws. These laws protect consumers who suffer preventable injuries or death as a result of unsafe and defectively designed or manufactured products.
