The Environmental Working Group (EWG) just released a report that asbestos exposure is believed to cause as many as 15,000 deaths every year in America. Their report was taken from a long-term study that took place from 1999 to 2013. The report recorded the total number of deaths that occurred during this time and pulled the average amount of deaths per year from this data.

While the estimated 15,000 may be somewhat lower than deaths that occurred in previous generations, it can give at least a base idea of how dangerous asbestos exposure is. It is important to note that the report doesn’t even include the numbers that have never been reported, leaving many to believe the actual death count would be much higher.

What Are the Signs of Asbestos Exposure?

Asbestos is composed of tiny, thin fibers that can attach to the lungs when inhaled. It was once commonly used in insulation and other products prior to the discovery that it could cause dangerous diseases. Workers in the industrial sectors can be exposed to the material more than average individual, causing an increased risk for lung-related diseases. Side effects may not be discovered for several decades after exposure, but the fibers can eventually lead to respiratory problems and even death.

The early warning signs of conditions related to asbestos exposure may include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Wheezing
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Coughing with mucus

While the term “asbestos exposure” is not usually listed as a cause of death, it can potentially lead to the development of fatal conditions such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. Even more surprising, asbestos exposure can affect family members and others in close contact with workers regularly exposed to asbestos due to secondhand exposure.
