The National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has designated May "National Motorcycle Safety Month." According to researchers, there are many ways for motorcyclists and drivers to share the road and avoid accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Only Wear Helmets Approved by the DOT

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires helmets to meet safety specifications. DOT-approved helmets are safer than unapproved helmets. To avoid serious head injuries, motorcyclists should only wear approved helmet models.

Don't Drink & Drive

Drunk driving is never okay. Impaired motorists and motorcyclists increase the chances of causing a severe accident. For motorcyclists, alcohol can impair concentration, balance, and depth perception. For other drivers, impairment can make it difficult to see motorcyclists.

Wear Protective Clothing

Never ride a motorcycle without protective clothing. Even small accidents, such as a fender bender, can lead to serious leg and foot injuries for motorcyclists. This is especially true if you fail to wear heavy, protective clothing and shoes.

Stay Aware

If you are driving a car, always remember to check twice for motorcyclists before changing lanes, merging, or turning. One of the most common causes of car-motorcycle accidents are left-hand turns. These usually occur when the motorcycle is going straight through an intersection and the car is turning left.

Motorcycle Safety and Lane Splitting

Texas law does not address motorcycle lane sharing. In other words, lane sharing isn't prohibited or permitted. This means that, in the event of a traffic stop, law enforcement will have to determine whether it was unlawful in a given circumstance. The Texas Department of Public Safety, though, declared lane splitting dangerous and illegal. According to Texas Transportation Code §545.060, drivers should "drive as nearly practical entirely within a single lane…" Although this interpretation is vague, the department claims the statue outlaws lane splitting.
