A fire at Chevron Phillips Chemical plant in Port Arthur injured two of its workers the night of July 7. Authorities described the incident as a "localized blaze" that was contained not long after it broke out at 8pm. Investigators from other Chevron Phillips Chemical plants are currently looking into the cause of the blaze.
The Port Arthur fire chief and a team were on standby the night of the fire, but the plant's own fire unit was able to extinguish the blaze. By half past 10pm, the fire department declared that the air was safe to breath, however, this is not conclusive evidence to indicate that a chemical emission didn't happen. The plant is required to file an emission event report within 24 hours with the Texas Commission on Environmental Equality as well as an incident report with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) within 8 hours because there was an injury.
This is not the first fire at the Chevron facility in Port Arthur. In April 2013, a fire broke out at the facility that hospitalized eight contracted employees.
The plant manager issued a statement of apology, expressing his regret over the incident as well as his thoughts and prayers for the people involved.
The two injured workers were taken the same night to University of Texas Medical Branch's burn unit, but their current status is unknown.
Chemical plant fires can be extremely dangerous. Hazardous chemicals like ethylene, which is the chemical produced at this Chevron Phillips plant, are highly flammable and have the potential to cause massive explosions.
